Volunteers help preparing a house for a sponsored refugee family in Raynes Park, West London

It is worth doing the Learning and Planning before you move straight into the application process for becoming a sponsor of refugees.  But if you are confident that you are capable of being a good sponsoring group there are a number of steps you will need to take.

If you need help with any of these processes, you can contact Sponsor Refugees or perhaps take part in our Training events.

Once you have taken these steps you will have to fill an Application form (see Application form plan section below) and a Resettlement Plan (see Resettlement plan section below).

  1. PUTTING YOUR GROUP ON AN OFFICIAL FOOTING
  2. FIND A HOME FOR THE REFUGEE FAMILY
  3. PREPARING A BUDGET
  4. RECRUITING INTERPRETERS
  5. LEARNING ENGLISH
  6. DRAWING UP A SAFEGUARDING POLICY
  7. WINNING THE CONSENT OF YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITY
  8. DRAWING UP A RESETTLEMENT PLAN
  9. APPLYING TO BE A COMMUNITY SPONSOR OF REFUGEES

Help and training

  • Filling the resettlement plan, and also the accompanying plans (such as a budget and a safeguarding policy) can seem a daunting exercise and, frankly, a rather boring one.
  • The same can be said for the final application form.
  • It often helps to do as much of it as a workshop exercise, with members of the group chipping in ideas and people working in twos and threes on particular elements of the plan.
  • Sponsor Refugees could help facilitate such a workshop.  See ORGANISING section.
  • Or you could take part in one of our training sessions. See TRAINING section.
